Not long ago, we explored a beautiful exhibition at Ca’ Pesaro⁠ in Venice, showcasing the works of Chilean-born artist⁠ Roberto Matta. His mesmerizing “automatic writing” paintings⁠ from the late ‘30s seem to forecast abstract expressionism.⁠ Meanwhile, elements from his vibrant creations of the ‘60s⁠
echo through the works of contemporary greats like Julie⁠ Mehretu and Albert Oehlen, with their elegant drawing in⁠ paint over rich, painterly backgrounds.⁠

The final piece, created at the turn of the century, eerily⁠ predicts our modern obsession with photos and selfies. I don’t⁠ know what kind of crystal ball Matta was gazing into, but he⁠ certainly had the future in sharp focus!⁠

Arthur and I go to Modena for the antique fair each year and⁠ the Romanesque Cathedral is always on our list for a visit. It’s⁠ the only one I’ve come across with an iconostasis perched⁠ above a crypt – a striking design choice, though I imagine it⁠ made it difficult for worshippers to feel truly connected to the⁠
act of transubstantiation.⁠
⁠
My favorite feature is a marvelous terracotta creche. Recent⁠ scholars believe that these beautiful, realistic biblical scenes⁠ rendered in terracotta were an important influence on the⁠ dramatic compositions of Caravaggio's paintings. I have to⁠ say, I couldn’t agree more.⁠

Carnevale di Venezia is always a highlight of Arthur and mine,⁠ and one of our favorite traditions is the annual gondola⁠ parade on the Grand Canal. Watching the elaborately⁠ decorated, anthropomorphic boats glide past – each helmed⁠ by costumed celebrants vying for the lead – is a mesmerizing⁠ and surreal spectacle. The energy, artistry, and sheer whimsy⁠
make it an unforgettable experience each time.⁠

Arthur and I recently visited Ferrara for the extraordinary “Il Cinquecento a Ferrara” exhibition. This showcase was a magnificent exploration of creators for the D’Este Court, including the infamous Lucrezia Borgia.⁠

I was absolutely enchanted by the creative variety of frames exhibited, many of them also from the 16th century. Each was chosen to perfectly complement and amplify the exquisite creations at the crest of the Renaissance. True masterpieces of innovation!⁠

Arthur and I were recently delighted by "Il Cinquecento a Ferrara", a very ambitious exhibition in the Palazzo Diamante of Ferrara, which beautifully portrayed the evolution of great talents in this important Renaissance Court. With the patronage of the D’Este family, several accomplished artists developed highly personalized styles, including my favorite Dosso Dossi.⁠
⁠
The signature painting of the exhibition is an incredible vision of Jupiter painting butterflies in the company of other gods. I would’ve loved to have been in the room with Lucrezia Borgia when this extraordinary masterpiece was being created.⁠
⁠
Another amazing painting is of Ercole D’Este, as his namesake, God Hercules, surrounded by pesky, Lilliputian adversaries. And of course images of our favorite saint, Sebastian, were in abundance.⁠
