A few years ago, I was honored to be asked by furniture maker Eric Brand to inaugurate a new program celebrating the art of collaboration. I leapt at the opportunity. I love to teach, and believe in an obligation to pass along one’s craft in the most enriching way possible. And I knew Eric would bring to this effort the intelligence and passion he brings to every endeavor.
It’s been rewarding to work with him as his vision developed for the “Masters and Mentors” program. At ICFF this month in New York, Eric and I showed off the first products to result from the partnership, a series of limited-edition furnishings crafted in luxurious materials. Our first mentee, Marcus Ferreira, joined Eric and myself to discuss our effort at the Luxe Interiors + Design Lounge on the exhibition floor.
The new designs were a great chance to explore the marvelous properties of selenite, a form of gypsum championed by Eric that has an unusual lustrous quality. Sales of these products will now benefit the continuation of the mentorship program. Shown below, each piece is available in a limited edition of 12. They are on view at the New York showroom of Walters at the D&D building on Third Avenue.
As Eric says, “the program offers an integral view of what designers and craftsmen can accomplish in close partnership.” For me, this has been the most fulfilling experience of my career. Marcus, our first mentee, left behind in our studios a gift of vision, enthusiasm and gratitude. I couldn’t ask for more.
