At home in the 18th century

In Art and history, Travels and events by Roger Thomas

On the way to Paris for Maison et Object this year, my team and I stopped in London for a quick look through the Wallace Collection. It is the repository of many of the best objects from the collection of the younger brother of Louis XVI, the Duc D’ Orleans, who was the real collector in the family. It is the closest I can come in my lifetime to visiting a great 18th-century collection at home in a palace, feeling as close as possible to the way it would have presented to visitors as installed at the Palais Royal.
Jewel-toned rooms abound with the finest examples of furniture, bronze, paintings, sculptures and the decorative arts.

For even more abundance, please see the photos from my visit last year.
