Voluptuous Chenonceaux

In Art and history by Roger Thomas

Vincente Wolf, Matthew Yee, my husband Arthur Libera and I detoured from the house party at Timothy Corrigan’s incomprable, luxe, Château du Grand Lucé to tour Chenonceaux, the most beautiful of all Châteaux in the Loire Valley.

Built in three main bursts, the last by Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de’ Medici, the gallery ballroom spans the river Cher.

This was my second visit this year. I never tire of its beautifully proportioned rooms, sumptuous furnishings, beautiful gardens and perfect views.

A favorite detail is the voluptuous curve of the stable roof built by Catherine de Medici and designed in this lovely silhouette to save precious oak timbers.
