The equator of the room

In Art and history, Designs by Roger Thomas

I find myself drawn to chair rails. They are that part of the room where the upper and lower finishes in the room resolve and furniture aligns.

Chair rails were of course inspired to keep walls free from blemishes caused by the chairs originally lining the walls of the rooms to keep the center part of the floor free for activitis and traffic.

This invention caused a rich invention of combinations of the finishes above and below this equatorial division.

I find I am attracted to this room waist and often photograph the combinations that for me define the personality of the room in background and furnishings.

I have photographed many of the conditions caused by this architectural division, here are some that include the namesake chair.

These were photographed in stately homes in England, châteaux in France and in museums.

Enjoy!
