Sublime pairings of new and old in Milan

In Art and history, Travels and events by Roger Thomas

While in Milan for Salone del Mobile in April, I always visit the magnificent collections of both the Brera and Ambrosiana Galleries.

The Brera has an important collection of 20th century Italian Modernists tucked away in a gallery next to its holdings of world- class Italian masterpieces from the 15th and 16th centuries.

I always duck in to inhale the important paintings in the collection by my favorite Italian painter, Giorgio Morandi.

They compare favorably to the Italian Renaissance works nearby.

The pairing of the very old and the powerfully new is sublime.
